Science and our understanding of the body are constantly evolving, and Pilates instruction is adapting to support today’s body. At SMA Pilates + Barre, we offer instruction that honors Pilates’ classical foundations while meeting your contemporary body and life where they are.
Our studio is predominantly contemporary, but we deeply value authentic Contrology for its famed alignment and balancing benefits. We have classically trained instructors on staff, and you’ll find both contemporary and classical influences in our classes.
We believe Pilates is a lifelong tool — for support, self-awareness, and sustainable strength. That means:

What is Pilates?
Pilates is a mind–body method of intentional, layered movement that focuses on postural alignment, controlled breath, mindful lengthening and strengthening, and full-body integration.
Joseph Pilates developed the method in the early 20th century as “Contrology” — a practice inspired by martial arts, gymnastics, boxing, and ancient and holistic philosophies of medicine and harmony between body and mind. He believed that “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness” and designed his method to help people move with maximum efficiency and minimum effort. — promoting health, vitality, vigor, and renewed awareness.
The Team
We bring decades of experience and have guided thousands of sessions in classical, contemporary, and Pilates-inspired formats. But beyond the certifications, what defines our teaching is our shared belief: that movement is a lifelong practice of refinement — not performance.
We teach with precision and warmth, in small class sizes that allow us to meet you where you are. This is a studio where you’re seen, supported, and encouraged to move better — for life.
Our instructors are highly certified through the most world-renowned programs in Pilates and many of us hold multiple movement certifications, including classical Pilates , dance training, and more. We hold specialties ranging from rehabilitative movement and injury recovery to pre/postnatal care, somatic practices, and mindful strength training. We are committed to continuing education, ensuring our knowledge evolves alongside the science of movement — and the needs of our clients. Each and every person on our team regularly invests in ongoing professional development, deepening our understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and mindful movement.
The Equipment
Pilates isn’t just a style of movement — it’s a system. A carefully equipped studio allows us to meet you where you are, and give your body what it actually needs. From top of the line reformers, a Cadillac, and a Wunda Chair, to props that support pelvic stability, core activation, and balance, our tools are intentional, precise, and performance-driven.
And yes — we proudly use Balanced Body Allegro 2 reformers. But for us, that’s just the beginning. In the hands of certified professionals, great equipment becomes a way to unlock your strength and transform how you move in the world.
